Matraville provides easy access to nearby beaches and swimming spots, such as Yarra Bay and Maroubra Bay, as well as the Sydney CBD and Sydney International Airport in nearby Botany. It’s close to the Westfield Eastgardens and South Point shopping centres in Eastgardens and Hillsdale respectively, plus Matraville has its own shopping strip along Bunnerong Road, with a Woolworths supermarket and a few specialty shops. Near the corner of Bunnerong Road and Perry Street, you’ll find The House Of Pie, a 24-hour pie shop for all your 3am pie cravings. There’s also a fantastic British & Irish convenience store on the opposite corner if you’re an expat craving snacks from home!

Though the suburb is definitely modernising, Matraville still offers a window into WWI and WWII-era Australia. Several Matraville streets are named after the sites of famous battles—Pozieres Ave, Somme Way, Beauchamp Rd, Flanders Ave, among others. Matraville Soldiers Settlement Public School was established by a group of WWI soldiers and their families. It sits on part of the former site of The Matraville Soldiers’ Garden Village, which was itself established to provide housing for injured returned servicemen and widows of fallen WWI soldiers. On the corner of Beauchamp and Anzac Pde sits a memorial park; the grassy area was once an entrance to the Soldier’s Garden Village, and it is marked by memorial plaques and a few sandstone bricks from the original site.
