One of very few Sydney suburbs with a French name, La Perouse was named after Jean-Francois de Galaup, Comte de La Perouse, a French explorer who landed on the shores of Botany Bay in 1788 mere days after Captain Cook arrived with the First Fleet.
La Perouse is surrounded by beautiful beaches, including Frenchmans Beach and Congwong Beach. Both offer crystal-clear waters, soft sand, and stunning views, making them perfect for swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling and relaxing. The New South Wales Golf Club occupies a significant portion of the La Perouse headland, offering one of the most picturesque courses in all of New South Wales.
La Perouse is also home to a number of historic landmarks and attractions, such as the La Perouse Museum. The museum showcases the history of the area, with exhibits on the local Indigenous culture, the arrival of the First Fleet and the life of La Perouse himself. Another interesting and historic feature of La Perouse is Bare Island, which sits about 30 metres offshore from the headland. A military fort was built atop the islet in the 1880s as a way of protecting the bay from naval invaders. Now heritage-listed, the Bare Island Fort is a popular tourist attraction. It also regularly hosts the Blak Markets, a showcase of local Indigenous arts, crafts and culture, and was even used as a filming location in Mission: Impossible 2.
